HIPAA compliance and Patient Safety Improvements to be the main IT priorities

According to the 15th Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)Leadership Survey, the main IT priorities this year for provider CIOs and IT directors is going to be HIPAA compliance and patient safety improvements.Forty-eight percent of respondents ranked compliance with the HIPAA security rule as a top priority and 47 percent cited patient safety issues. Another 44 percent were concerned about replacing or upgrading clinical systems and 37 percent cited implementing wireless systems.Other priorities include implementing electronic medical records and network infrastructure, according to the data collected. Lack of financial support was cited as the biggest barrier to IT implementation, followed by suppliers' inability to effectively deliver their products and the difficulty of proving return on investment for technology.
