In a world of increasing demands for compliance of all kinds, data retention and access to that data, has become a must. Legal issues are are a big impetus (missing White House e-mails, anyone?), but so are regulatory compliance mandates such as SOX and HIPAA, which often require encrypted archival of electronic data. Storage, and lots of it, has become relatively cheap. Retaining files and folders on network servers usually does not pose much of an issue. However, more strategic measures are called for when dealing with the archiving and retrieval of database files.
