Identity theft affects businesses as well as individual victims.Business owners and managers who put employees’ and customers personal information at risk could face fines — up to $ 1 million per occurrence — and prison sentences — up to 10 years — as well as the loss of time and customer trust.

Steven Spradling, of the Springdale-based consulting business Insight, was in Fayetteville Thursday to talk about what businesses could and should do to protect their customers and themselves and why they should bother.
