Clean Harbors Reidsville Facility Receives Carolina Star and OSHA VPP Star Designations

(July 30, 2008)-- Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. (Clean Harbors), the leading provider of environmental and hazardous waste management services throughout North America, today announced that its Reidsville, North Carolina facility has received the Carolina Star Award designation from the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL). The Award also qualifies the Clean Harbors treatment, storage, and disposal facility for Star status in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

The Carolina Star program recognizes worksites that are self-sufficient in their ability to control hazards. The Clean Harbors facility, which moves up from the NCDOL Rising Star and OSHA Merit categories, joins an elite group of 160 North Carolina companies that have qualified for Star status since the program's inception.

In order to qualify, companies must maintain a three-year average for both the total recordable case rates and cases with days away from work, job transfer, or restriction rates that are at or below 50 percent of the most recently published Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics rate for their peers in the North American Industrial Classification System.

The Federal VPP is a comprehensive health and safety process that requires employee involvement, management support, and cooperation with OSHA. Recipients demonstrate a strong management and employee safety culture that ensures a safe and healthful workplace environment, with occupational injury and illness incidence rates below the state and national averages for companies within the same industry classification.
