Shaw Recognized for Safety Excellence at Power Plant Project

(July 17, 2008)-- The Shaw Group announced that the Fossil Division of its Power Group has received the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) STAR designation from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) for excellence in occupational safety and health at the Cleco Rodemacher 3 power plant project.

Shaw is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for Cleco Power LLC’s new 600 MW electricity generating plant in Boyce, La. The project was named a VPP STAR site for its comprehensive, successful safety and health management system and its low injury and illness rates. The project team has achieved more than 4 million safe work hours since work began in May 2006. The Cleco Rodemacher 3 power plant project is Shaw’s 14th active VPP STAR site.

“The VPP STAR designation reflects a commitment to Shaw’s strong safety culture by every employee working at this site,” said Monty Glover, president of Shaw’s Fossil Division. “This outstanding achievement was earned by the entire project team, and it further demonstrates Shaw’s ability to safely execute large, complex projects.”

“Designation as a VPP STAR participant is a testament to sustained excellence in all areas of Shaw’s safety and health management system,” said Edwin G. Foulke Jr., assistant secretary of OSHA.

Shaw’s inclusion in VPP is OSHA’s official recognition of its outstanding health and safety accomplishments, and STAR status is the highest level of recognition in the VPP designation. In order to qualify for the prestigious STAR award, Shaw’s project team at Cleco’s Rodemacher 3 site had to successfully pass a rigorous on-site evaluation by OSHA safety and health professionals.
