OSHA Training Institute, San Diego Gets Susan Harwood Grant Award

(Feb 15, 2007)--The OSHA Training Institute at UCSD Extension has been awarded $175,000 Susan Harwood Training Grant . The grant has made it possible for the institute to offer a two-day course in Healthcare Facility Evacuation Planning at no charge to select participants.  Participants will learn how to respond in a disaster situation and how to rapidly disseminate evacuation and safety information throughout their organizations.

In order to optimize the limited resources of healthcare workers in an emergency situation, hospitals must provide their staff with adequate training in evacuation planning before a disaster strikes. The hospital’s emergency response plan and the communication of that plan are crucial to the health and safety of patients and healthcare workers.

"Our goal is to encourage healthcare workers to consider the issue of evacuation and become more invested in thinking about the future for themselves, their co-workers and their patients,” says Carol Hosmer, Project Director. "As part of the grant, UCSD Extension will be teaching the two-day courses at no cost to a limited number of healthcare professionals in San Diego, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Honolulu," adds Hosmer.

The OSHA Training Institute offers high quality, standards-based OSHA training to employers from across the United States. Over two hundred safety courses are offered through UCSD Extension annually to over 3000 students. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
